India and the US in talks on Wednesday, decided that they would not support any separate state in Sri Lanka as demanded by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, reports confirm. Indian Foreign Secretary, Lalit Mansingh and US under secretary of state, in charge of South Asian Affairs, Thomas Pickering held talks in Delhi on Wednesday, where they reiterated their position not to support a separate state in Sri Lanka, sources said. According to Pickering the US supported a regional initiative revolving around India and they also backed Norway’s peace effort, but they are not intervening directly, they are only “ watching the situation in Sri Lanka carefully.” Their main aim is to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe at all costs, Pickering said, adding that a military solution was not possible. “Violence is not a solution to the ethnic problem”, he said. Meanwhile, UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan supported the Norwegian peace initiative in Sri Lanka, saying that a political settlement was needed in the country.
