President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga convened the first meeting of the newly appointed Presidential Task Force on Ethnic Affairs and National Integration on Wednesday at Temple Trees. A press release issued by the Presidential Secretariat states: Some 30 members representing political, academic, administrative and NGO sector are included in this Task Force. Addressing the Task Force Her Excellency said that the country was facing a critical moment in our history. Approaches to the problem required a balanced mind devoid of unemotional thinking at the highest level. "Acceptable and pragmatic solutions to the burning issues could be identified and implemented if all of us will exert our utmost effort irrespective of petty differences". The President presented a draft strategic plan and basic concepts for the consideration of the Task Force and invited the members of the Task Force to work out necessary guidelines and an action plan to achieve short-term and long-term objectives of the Task Force. The Task Force was also requested to identify the priority areas for urgent attention by the Government as well as the public in this hour of need. The Task Force will function under the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional Affairs, Ethnic Affairs and National Integration with the direct supervision of Her Excellency, the President. Deputy Minister Dilan Perera will be the convenor of the Task Force.
