Intensity of Tiger attacks eased says SLA
[27 May 2000]

The Army Headquarters yesterday afternoon confirmed that the Tigers had eased their attacks on the Security Forces, but sudden intensification of fighting might occur.

According to military sources there was no heavy fighting on Thursday and up to noon yesterday, but the situation could change rapidly.

The Forces are confident of holding onto their current defences while inflicting maximum possible losses on the LTTE, military sources said, adding that the top brass has repeatedly rejected calls for the evacuation of troops from the Peninsula and that troops will continue to defend Jaffna and other areas under their control.

There had been no heavy fighting since early this week after the battle in the outskirts of Chavakachcheri, which left over 150 terrorists killed and many more wounded.
