UK supports Norway’s peace initiative
[27 May 2000]

The United Kingdom believes that Norway should be given a chance as a mediator in peace talks between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government, sources said.

According to British High Commissioner to India, Sir Rob Young, UK believes that Norway would be a good mediator because of their record of neutrality and negotiating skills.

If the Norwegian effort failed, there was little reason to believe that a multi-lateral initiative or larger group of mediators would succeed, he said, adding that it was better not to have multiplicity of mediators.

He declared that UK stood for a peaceful, negotiated solution to the Eelam issue within the framework of the integrity of Sri Lanka.
