The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) operated vessel carrying goods, returned to Trincomalee on Friday evening as it failed to arrive at an agreement with the security forces and the LTTE on a port of disembarkation. Spokesman for the ICRC Harsha Gunawaradane said that the ICRC was in the process of trying to work out a solution to the crisis. He said that the ICRC had failed to receive "clearance" from the LTTE up to evening yesterday. The vessel set said from Trincomalee on Wednesday for the Jaffna peninsula carrying supplies including medicines and non-food supplies to the non-governmental community including ICRC staff in the peninsula. The essential medicines were for hospitals in the area. Mr. Gunawardane also said that the ICRC vessel were the only means by which the NGO community in the embattled community could receive relief supplies. However, he expressed hope of being able to receive a favorable response "soon".
