Pickering arrives in Colombo after Delhi visit
[29 May 2000]

US Under Secretary of State, Thomas Pickering arrives in Colombo today, for talks with President Kumaratunga, after his visit to New Delhi to discuss the Sri Lankan war situation with Indian officials, sources said.

Pickering’s visit is seen as a strong gesture of US support for Sri Lanka, with reports of US warships moving towards the Arabian Sea.

Following the expression of support of the Washington administration for the Norwegian peace initiative, the visit is seen by many as a booster at bringing the two parties to the negotiating table.

Reports indicate that Pickering wanted India to act as a peacemaker in the current crisis and that the visit shows the increased cooperation between Colombo and Washington since the US designated the LTTE as a terrorist organisation, with the Tigers being on the US banned list since October 1997.
