The government dismissed LTTE offer for a temporary cease-fire for 12 hours on Saturday, in the northern Jaffna peninsula, reiterating that troops are standing strong. The LTTE had announced for the cease-fire to allow the evacuation of civilians from the battle zones of the Thenmarachchi division of the peninsula, around 25 kilo meters (16 miles) east of Jaffna City. "There is nothing official, we cannot take such offers seriously," Chief Military spokesman Palitha Fernando said reiterating that the security forces are in a strong position and there is no need to accept any cease-fire. The LTTE have made similar offers in the past and whenever the government rejected them, fresh attacks were launched on the troops. According to military sources this tactical move was in view of strengthening Tiger supplies and positions of the LTTE. However, according to political sources, government leaders and military top brass have already held urgent meetings in their attempt to brace the troops in Jaffna against future LTTE attacks. Meanwhile, Tigers have started to propagate news of the cease-fire saying that persistent artillery and aerial bombardment by the Sri Lankan Army on Saturday have made escape impossible for about 15,000 Tamil civilians trapped in the Chavakachcheri sector of Jaffna. Military sources responding to the news pointed out that it was the LTTE who are posing as a major threat against the Tamil civilians with their continuous attacks on the Jaffna City, where a number of innocent civilians have died. Political observers pointing out to the tactics of the Tigers in the past said that the LTTE must be in a desperate position to strengthen themselves, considering the sudden concern towards the Tamil civilians urging the international governments and world human rights organizations to take serious concern about the predicament of Tamil civilians. "It is the LTTE that is using civilians as human shields and subjecting them to indiscriminate artillery and aerial bombardment," they said pointing out that the government would not budge to their false offer for a humanitarian cease-fire, attached with sly motives.
