The LTTE has started a large scale conscription drive by summoning all those under 45 years of age to join the ranks, while those over 45 years of age are deployed to man the LTTE defences in Wanni. Civilians arriving from uncleared areas in Wanni reported that they used jungle paths to escape to the government controlled areas for fear of being dragged in to combat by force. LTTE leaders have summoned civilians to village schools to announce the massive conscription drive. "The LTTE leadership in uncleared areas have instructed schoolchildren to give up education forthwith until 'Eelam' is achieved and asked students to join its cadres," the Special Media Information Centre (SMIC) said yesterday. It has also been reported that some LTTE cadres have looted vacated homes and shops. "It is clear how desperate the Tigers have become when they have gone to such an extent to drag even the elders over 45 years of age in to the fighting. This clearly shows how little they care about their own Tamil people including children and elders," political sources said. According to military sources, civilians in Jaffna under military control, have started to plead the security forces not to abandon them, expressing fears of LTTE violence and numerous hardships.
