US will never recognise a separate state of Eelam says Pickering
[30 May 2000]

US Under Secretary of State, Thomas Pickering said yesterday that the United States would never recognise the LTTE’s separate state of Eelam, which can only exist in the “ Planet of the dead.”

According to him if the Tigers declared independence, the international community automatically becomes the arbitrator and there would be no international support for these terrorists.

The US classified the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam as a terrorist organisation in October 1997, banning them in the United States and Pickering firmly believes that the support that the US has given to the Sri Lankan government in this form will continue.

The US had long stood for the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka and was opposed to the creation of a separate state. He and the Indian Foreign Secretary had reiterated this on his current visit to India.

Following talks with President Kumaratunga, Pickering said that there was the possibility of purchasing superior military equipment from the US. He also discussed the humanitarian problem involving civilians in these areas and the government’s plans to overcome these problems.

Pickering firmly believes that a military solution to the ethnic conflict was not possible with the only alternative being a negotiated political statement.

He claimed that the US, India and Norway were in a cooperative effort towards a resolution of the conflict.
