Civilians residing in the war-torn north of Sri Lanka, show consent in moving to government controlled areas in order to get away from the clutches of the ruthless Tigers, who are violating their right for a peaceful existence, sources confirm. According to UN reports during the spurge of fighting last Saturday, a large number of civilians from Tenmarachchi, left the area against the wishes of the LTTE and travelled to the South of Wanni. The fleeing civilians were relieved to reach government controlled areas where they could find shelter from terrorist attacks. Meanwhile, the Jaffna peninsula witnessed a sudden calm last Sunday when the LTTE declared a unilateral 12-hour ceasefire with fighting taking place only in Chavakachcheri. Reports indicate that civilians residing in war torn areas are dissatisfied with Tiger rule because of the inhuman abuse caused to them and their families. The conscription of children is another threat to many of the people in these areas, where many live in fear of their children being taken by force to the Tiger army. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam who claim to be fighting for the rights of the Tamil people and a separate homeland in Sri Lanka have in fact, lost all popularity among their own people, because of the ruthless murders caused by the terrorists and the endless fighting which has disrupted peace and tranquillity in these areas.
