Commissioner General of Essential Services Major General Sarath Munasinghe said in a meeting headed by Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar that a three months supply of essential food items is available in the peninsula. He further said that the vessel 'Mercs Kumana' was carrying another consignment of food items to the North. Foreign Minister Kadirgamar said that the government is fully confident with the capacity of the Army to hold its ground on the peninsula. He said that the information on the position of the civilians must be viewed in the context of the current military situation in the peninsula wherein the role of the army has been to stop the onslaught launched by the LTTE. Meanwhile the government sent essential medical supplies for the Jaffna hospital in an ICRC chartered vessel 'Java Gulf' said the ICRC spokesman in Sri Lanka, Harsha Gunawardena. He further said along with the medical supplies, 'Java Gulf' also transported relief items from the ICRC and other Non Governmental Organizations for civilians in the region.
