Pickering calls for unfettered media freedom in Sri Lanka
[31 May 2000]

US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Thomas Pickering called for unfettered media freedom where the government has imposed a tight censorship following a deteriorating military crisis in the north.

"Press freedom should be unfettered", Pickering said adding that he was optimistic that the censorship restriction on the local and the foreign media might be lifted soon.

The visiting US official said the Sri Lankan government must ensure that civil liberties were not curtailed "even in times of difficulties in the battlefield".

Pickering urged Sri Lankan leaders to press ahead with a bipartisan approach to the country’s drawn out Tamil Separatists conflict.
