The nation will bid farewell to late Industrial Development Minister C. V. Gunaratne and Mrs. Sheami Gunaratne today. The sate funeral will be held at the S. de S. Jayasinghe Memorial Park, Dehiwala at 4.30 p.m.
The national flag will fly at half mast at all public institutions in Colombo District and the Government made request to close all the meat stalls and taverns as a mark of respect to the late minister and others.
Two sons and a daughter survive late minister and his wife.
Clement Victor Gunaratne received his education at Royal College, Colombo. C.V. was a school prefect, captain of the college rugby team while he was a student. Youthful C.V. entered to politics as a member of the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council in which he was Leader of the Opposition (Sri Lanka Freedom Party). He was chosen as a Central Committee Member of the SLFP in early 1970s.
C.V. entered to the parliament at the parliamentary general election held in 1989. He was Official Spokesman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party for Trade, Port and Shipping until parliament was dissolved in 1994.
