No rift in BJP’s Tamil Nadu allies – Indian Home Minister
[04 July 2000]

The Indian Home Minister, L.K. Advani sarcastically commented, of the Opposition’s proposal to create a split in the National Democratic Alliance over the Sri Lankan Tamil issue.  He further said, that the Tamil LTTE should not be encouraged through a secessionism among the agents of our neighbours.

The BJP Tamil Nadu allies, DMK, MDMK and PMK are fully in support of the Government of India’s policy on Sri Lanka, despite their political opponents who have again tried to divide NDA.

In his special address, at the Marumaazharchi Dravida Munnetra Kuzhagam [MDMK] “Tamilnadu special awakening conference”, he clearly stated, the Indian’s concern of the pathetic situation of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.  The Government of Sri Lanka is concerned of re-establishing the peace and integrity which prevailed in Sri Lanka.  The Indian Government is very keen on using diplomatic measures in their favour, but without any military assistance.

With reference to the most sensitive issue ‘Eelam’, PMK and MDMK stated, BJP is not hindered to voice upon the situation of Tamils in Sri Lanka. The Union Power Minister, Kumaramangalam stated, India should not be influenced by the forces which are in threat of the Indian unity and integrity.

The Chennai Special Correspondent reported that Advani stated after arriving at New Delhi that he took the MDMK conference as an opportunity, to explain the Government’s stand on the Sri Lankan problem and also the MDMK’s continuous support to the BJP Government.
