Lankan envoy arrives in Delhi for talks
[05 July 2000]

A Sri Lankan envoy of President Kumaratunga arrived in India, yesterday on a three-day visit, for talks with Indian officials on the prevailing situation in the country, sources said.

“ Lakshman Jayakody, Minister for Buddha Sasana, Culture and Religious Affairs will be visiting New Delhi from July 4 to 6 as a special envoy of President Kumaratunga”, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

Minister Jayakody will meet Indian Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee and Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh during his three-day visit, officials confirmed, adding that the Minister was carrying a letter from President Kumaratunga.

Meanwhile, Norwegian envoy, Erik Solheim told the Times of India that New Delhi should do what it is already doing : appealing to the LTTE to settle for less than Eelam by agreeing to a solution within the framework of Sri Lanka’s unity and integrity and persuading Colombo to meet a wide range of Tamil aspirations. This is the only way to negotiate, the only way ahead when the parties are setting out on the difficult path of direct negotiations.
