The UNP yesterday initiated disciplinary action against Ronnie de Mel for declaring in Parliament that he would act in defiance of the party decision to vote against the emergency, sources said. “We will call for an explanation and institute disciplinary action against him,” UNP, MP Tyronne Fernando said. According to him, the Secretary General had written to de Mel asking for an explanation of his conduct. He further added that Minister de Mel had been present at the party meeting to determine its position on the extension of the emergency law, but had kept silent throughout the meeting.
