Proposed new constitution to be presented today in parliament for Tamil political parties
[10 July 2000]

The proposed constitutional reforms package is to be tabled in Parliament today, in order to get the suggestions of the Tamil parties, sources revealed.

The government expects to receive their consent and consideration within a week’s  time.  During this time, the government has decided to present the proposals to the Maha Sangha and other religious and national organisations.

With the consideration and consent of the minority parties, the constitution is to be tabled again to the UNP's consent on 17th and 18th of this month.  After the UNP consent, the draft of the constitution is to be laid in parliament, on the 20th and 21st of this month.

The government is planning to bring the draft constitution as a 'white paper' with the permission of the Attorney General Department and plans to hold a referendum regarding the proposed constitution, after the forthcoming elections, sources revealed.
