Mahajana Eksath Peramuna [MEP] and the UNP Alternative Group decided to contest for the forthcoming parliamentary elections with the People’s Alliance, on Wednesday. The senior representatives of the constituent parties of the PA stated that they were informed of this decsiion during at a meeting chaired by the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge. The UNP Alternative Group assured the President of their sole support as they did so in the previous election. The sources declared that the SLFP leadership fully supports the inclusion of these candidates in the PA’s nomination lists. PA was concerned of the SLMC decision to contest in the forth coming election, independently and urged them to change the decision when their leader, Minister M. H. M. Ashraff, returns from the Tehran on Tuesday. Deputy Chairman of the Committee Rauff Hakeem stated their main intention to contest independently is to secure additional seats in the parliament.
