President Chandrika Bandaranaike informed yesterday at Temple Trees that she has called off the Norochcholai power project, the Special Media Information Centre said. The President informed Parliamentarians and party leaders of the Puttalam , Kurunegala, Kandy and Matale Districts that the government had decided not to go ahead with the power project in Norochcholai. MPs were informed by the President that after careful consideration of the responses and appeals of the leaders of the Catholic community of the area and Ministers of the Puttalam district on this particular project, she decided not to go ahead with the power plant. She will also reject the loan and grant funding that was approved for the construction and commissioning of the project.
