An underworld gang leader allegedly having LTTE connections, was shot dead by police yesterday morning in the Maligawatte Police area, when he failed to stop at a police checkpoint. Two female accomplices died with him, sources said. The gang leader Nadarajah Wijepalan alias Pathale Wijepalan was travelling in a brand new Toyota with his two female accomplices, one of whom was at the wheel, when they defied a Police check point 'halt' order, firing at Police. Police returned fire, resulting in the death of the gangster and his two accomplices. The two female accomplices were identified as Chamila Thushari,30 a Job Agent in Colombo and Renuka Damayanthi,24 of Nugegoda. When the ganster fired at Police, they returned fire killing all three inmates in the car, sources said. Police recovered a 9mm pistol, a 38mm revolver, one hand grenade and seven live bullets from the car in which they were travelling. Wijepalan allegedly charges Rs.2 to 3 million per contract, investigators reveal. "We are carrying out operations to destroy underworld gangs and several special investigations have been launched. We are also on the lookout for Dhammika, another notorious underworld criminal," police said.
