[17 July 2000]

The British Under Secretary of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Peter Westmascott, met all Tamil political party representatives at the British Deputy High Commissioner’s Residence.  At the meeting he asked the party representatives, to set aside the defects existing in the proposed constitution and support the Government in the peace making process.

Linda Dunfield, British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Douglas Devananda [EPDP], D.Siddhartan [PLOTE], Nallaiah Gurupan [ACTC], N. Srikanthan [TELO], N. Raviraj [TULF] and K. Suresh Premachandra [EPRLF] participated in the meeting.

He further stated the presence of many Sri Lankan refugee seekers in Great Britain in turn had made their country the centre of great concern to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka.  EPDP, PLOTE and TELO agreed with Westmascott and stated that certain amendments should be made to the proposed constitution.  EPRLF, ACTC and TELO stated that they cannot be happy with the PA-UNP proposals and strongly stated that the LTTE must be brought to the negotiating floor to find a permanent solution.

Peter Westmascott, finally stressed that all parties should arrive at a quick solution to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka.
