Over two thousands parents of servicemen missing in action, members of the Association of Relatives of Servicemen Missing in Action, have decided to remind President Kumaratunga of her promise to allow the members to travel to the Wanni LTTE camps to inquire after their missing ones. They are to gather at the Mahaweli Center next week on Monday to discuss possibilities. Head of Association, E.P. Nanayakkara said that a fax message has been sent to the President notifying the Mahaweli Centre meeting and prospective 'peace march' thereafter. "We were told by President Kumaratunga that the feasibility of the decision will have to be weighed before granting official permission for the parents in out association to visit the Wanni". "Although we can undertake the visit independently without the government green light we prefer, if we could get official authorisation because it would allow us to get an ICRC escort as well as assistance measures for the trip from other human rights as well as the clergy," he said. He also said that he had received messages from the LTTE welcoming their arrival. "The decision to travel to the Wanni was unanimously taken by all parents belonging to our association. If anything should happen to us as a result of this journey, it is our responsible and ours alone. We feel that it is pointless to wait any longer to make this journey. It has to be done now and hopefully, such a visit will tend to ease the war tension on both sides and lay the path to peace," he said. According to estimates, over 2000 soldiers are believed to be missing in action.
