‘Present the proposed constitution to Buddhist Clergy’ – UNP tells govt
[20 July 2000]

“It has been decided to request the government to place before the Buddhist clergy the proposed constitution immediately as the government has failed to do it so far,” a UNP release stated recently.

The UNP parliamentary group agreed, yesterday, to suggest to the government to present the proposed constitution to the Buddhist Clergy, immediately.

At the recent PA-UNP talks the government had agreed to comply with the UNP request to present the draft constitution to the Maha Sangha and the Maha Nayakas, but they had failed to do it so far, UNP sources said.

“ It has been stressed by the UNP at the bipartisan talks that the clauses in the present constitution regarding the protection afforded to Buddhism should be included in the new constitution without any changes,” local newspapers reported.
