Swiss consider accession to UN Convention
[21 July 2000]

With reports of the LTTE shifting its bases to Switzerland, the Swiss government is considering accession to the UN Convention against terrorist financing, sources said.

Two Sri Lankan groups, which met with Swiss Foreign Ministry officials recently were assured of this consideration. The two groups included The Committee for Peace in Sri Lanka and the Committee for a United Sri Lanka, two activists groups in Switzerland.

This decision is contrary to earlier reports that since Switzerland is not a member of the UN it would not fall under the ambit of the UN Convention against terrorist financing.

“ Earlier Sri Lanka’s quest to get action against LTTE, had been thwarted by the fact that the Swiss have only their normal penal procedure to deal with this issue and have no special laws,” local newspapers reported.

However, now the position is likely to change if the Swiss government is to accede to the UN Convention against terrorist financing, it s an obligation for signatory states to take action against groups raising funds for terrorist activities in another country, sources said.
