Air force trainer jet crashes at BIA

An air force trainer jet crashed at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, yesterday. The pilot was rescued and no casualties were reported, sources confirmed.

The Chinese built F5T jet crashed during a training mission, but the pilot ejected himself before the crash. He walked away after landing by parachute and was taken to hospital for a check up officials said.

Airport authorities confirm that there was no damage to equipment or the runway and there was no hindrance to international flights.

According to the Special Media Information Centre, during the crash the pilot ejected himself safely and the aircraft caught fire. Subsequently the SLAF and the Airport fire services brought the fire under control.

SLAF is conducting investigations to ascertain the cause, sources said.
