The United States is to provide advanced training to Sri Lankan security forces under the Extended Relations Programme (ERP), defence sources said. Sri Lanka was among the 20 countries in which the US have conducted courses since 1995. The army and navy had benefited from the courses ever since, when different branches of US forces conducted courses in Sri Lanka. Advisors from some specialised units of the US forces were expected to conduct courses later this year. Meanwhile, thousands of deserters are said to be undergoing training at various training facilities ahead of their redeployment. They had been among the 5,000 deserters arrested in raids carried out by teams of army and police since the beginning of this month.
