A 10-year north-east merger deal on offer
[24 July 2000]

According to DPLF leader Dharmalingam Sidharthan, President Kumaratunga has agreed to a 10-year temporary merger of the north-east, sources revealed.

However, TULF sources were not impressed by the 10-year offer which doubles the previous 5-year temporary merger proposed that was to be thereafter to be tested by a referendum in the Eastern Province. Certain foreign news agencies quoted V. Anandasagari, senior vice president of the party, saying they were holding out for a permanent merger.

The state media has claimed “persistent” rumours of more opposition MPs crossing to the government. In that context, any deal with the Tamil parties as attempted with the 10-year north-east merger proposal is considered an attempt to retain their parliamentary support and not negate the impact of crossovers from the UNP.

Meanwhile, TULF parliamentary group leader Joseph Pararajasingham said that time was running out for a PA-UNP agreement on resolving the Tamil problem.
