“As the minister in charge of the subject, I state with responsibility that the particular clause is intact, the clause is not removed or disturbed,” said Minister G.L. Peiris on Friday to the Mahanyake Theras of Malwatte and Asgiriya. However, the Mahanyake Theras rejected the constitution and stated that they would go on rejecting it. The minister who was in Kandy on Friday told the Mahanyakes that the constitutional proposals will be introduced in parliament in early August and the government was awaiting the consensus of the UNP on very few items after next Thursday. He also denied the allegation that the clause protecting and fostering Buddhism had been removed from the draft constitution. “The Government undertakes to protect and foster Buddhism in Sri Lanka,” he said.
