Tamil parties likely to contest under an alliance
[25 July 2000]

All Tamil parties except the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) have expressed willingness to form an alliance at the forthcoming elections.

"We are still discussing the possibilities between the parties, so we can't say yet how the alliances will be formed. But there will certainly not be one alliance," said EPRLF leader Varatharaja Perumal.

Also he did not rule out a possible merger of the EPRLF itself with the PA, should an alliance with a Tamil party not work out.

"We're not closing any doors. All avenues are open for discussion," he added.

PLOTE leader P. Siddharthan said he was personally looking forward to seeing all Tamil parties coming together as one, but with the unlikelihood of the TULF joining any other party, that would not be a reality.

"If all come together we can ensure the representation of Tamil wishes better," he added.

TULF MP S. Ananadasagary ruled out any alliance with another Tamil party, claiming all of them being involved in extortion, kidnapping etc.

"These groups are extorting money. We cannot have anything to do with these parties," he said.

He said that the alliances were being formed by the other parties to join together "against the TULF as the common enemy".
