UNP spokesman Karunasena Kodituwakku told reporters yesterday that the UNP will not vote for the proposed constitution if it were presented in parliament prior to the elections. With strong opposition from the Maha Sangha and Sinhala Buddhist groups, Mr Karunasena said that the UNP could not support a reforms package that had not received the support of the people. He said that this decision was arrived at since the country’s leading Buddhist prelates and several Tamil political parties have so far not extended their consent for the new constitution. “ The proposed constitution should be submitted to parliament after negotiating with all relevant political parties contesting at the forthcoming Parliamentary elections,” he said.
