Peace Council wants international pressure
[28 July 2000]

The National Peace Council urged the international community to assist the government and the LTTE to follow non-military ways to ensure the democratic rights of people living in conflict areas.

The council issuing a statement said that the country was concentration on constitutional reforms and both the government forces and the LTTE were preparing themselves for a "do or die" battle. For the last three months the state of the civilians living in Jaffna, most of who were displaced had been pathetic.

The council noted that there was a "disturbing passivity" in people handling over their sovereignty to two "unreachable decision makers" to amend the constitution.

However, they stated that of the two parties could come to an agreement the country would be spared from the looming violence and bloodshed.

It also requested the government and the opposition to keep the national question out of the political debate during the up coming general election campaign which is expected to take a confrontational mode.
