TULF candidates under threat in Jaffna electoral
[01 September 2000]

Party candidates of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) contesting the forthcoming General Election on October 10 are under threat particularly in the Jaffna electoral district, party sources said.

According to a senior party spokesman, “ some candidates have already refused to contest,” and an armed Tamil group contesting the NorthEast districts is carrying out a systematic campaign of terror against TULF candidates and supporters.

The TULF has informed the government of continuing threats to candidates and party supporters in the Jaffna peninsula.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Air Force has been directed to fly members of the TULF and other Tamil parties contesting the Jaffna district, to and from the peninsula.

The LTTE has so far not indicated its position with regard to the forthcoming general election.
