NLF, LDA enter no-contest-pact
[01 September 2000]

The New Left Front (NLF) and the Left and Democratic Alliance have entered into a no-contest-pact for the forthcoming general election, party sources said.

Under this agreement, the LDA will contest in Jaffna, Ratnapura and Kegalle while the NLF will field their candidates in other districts.

According to NLF General Secretary, Linus Jayathilake, their candidates will contest districts like Kegalle from the LDA list, while the LDA will field its candidates from the NLF list in other districts.

Vasudeva Nanyakkara of the LDA said this merger would give a new lease of life to the Left.

A mutual understanding has been reached between the NLF and the LDA in contesting this election, Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne of the NLF said.
