SLMC
and National Unity Alliance (NUA) leader A.H.M. Ashraff said on yesterday
that he will back President Chandrika Kumaraunge "so long as she is
in the political field but will not support the UNP so long as Ranil
Wickramasinghe is leading the party. "I promised her to give my unconditional support and a memorandum of understanding was signed between the PA and the NUA," he told at a press conference held yesterday. PA
General Secretary, D.M. Jayaratne and the General Secretary of the NUA,
Rauf Hakeem represented the two parties in signing the agreement. The
NUA will contest in nine districts in support of the PA but under its
party symbol-the tree. The SLMC leader emphasised that the decision to support the PA was taken only with a view to strengthen the hands of the President to restore peace and prosperity and to defeat the UNP which is against the constitutional reforms.
