All leading political parties from the major districts are currently handing in their nominations and so far only two election related incidents have been reported during the last five days, sources said. Yesterday, many parties filed in nominations to avoid a last minute rush when nominations end on September 4. According to People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), in comparison to previous elections this one has been more or less incident-free. Violence had reached a peak during nomination periods at several previous elections. Both
the People’s Alliance (PA) and the United National Party (UNP) handed in
their nominations for 12 districts including Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara,
Ratnapura, Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Kegalle,
Kurunegala, by last afternoon.
