The Norwegian special envoy on Sri Lankan affairs Erik Solheim visited Colombo last Tuesday to study the present political situation and the activities related to the forthcoming polls in October. Political sources revealed that the brief visit of Mr. Solheim was a routine one as a mediator on the Sri Lankan ethnic issue and that he had met the Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgarmar, Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe and the General Secretary of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) R. Sambanthan. Meanwhile, Mr. Solheim has stated that his country's efforts in finding a settlement to the ethnic issue would continue and that Norway was in touch with the concerned parties. He has also stated that Norway was watching the election activities in Sri Lanka and it was after the polls in October that Norway would return to the peace process.
