A statement issued by Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake said that the four main political parties including PA, UNP, JVP, Puravasi Peramuna and Sihala Urumaya submitted their nominations to contest all 22 electoral districts in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. The ruling PA party had fielded candidates as an independent group led by the Jaffna SLFP organiser Velmurugu Thangaraja though they had no filed nominations in the Jaffna district, political sources said. The Elections Commissioner's Department has received 417 nominations lists altogether from 29 political parties and 99 independent groups. Of the 5048 candidates contesting the elections, 3883 candidates are from political parties while the rest are from independent groups. According to Department sources, fourteen nomination lists have been rejected by the returning officers from nine districts. Most rejected nominations had been signed by someone other than the General Secretary of the party, the authorised person to sign them, sources revealed.
