At least ten Tigers killed at Yala
[05 September 2000]

A group of more than 40 LTTE cadres, who attempted to enter the Yala National Park through Colombuthurai on Sunday, confronted the STF, resulting in the death of at least ten Tigers, sources said.

The attempt is believed to be a failed attempt on the part of the LTTE targeted at the Kataragama area. A map of Kataragama was found with the dead Tiger cadres, sources revealed.

The cadres, who fled with their casualties when the STF retaliated, were carrying heavy weapons and engaged in a battle that lasted over two hours.

Military sources said this attack was an attempt o provoke violence in the south, with the forthcoming general elections.
