A free and fair election devoid of violence is fundamental to the integrity of the democratic electoral process and business leaders urge all political parties, the Elections Commissioner and the law enforcement authorities, to ensure the upholding of law and order, the Joint Forum of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Employers Organisations and Trade Associations of Sri Lanka, said yesterday. In a statement issued by the Joint Forum, the private sector said, The Joint Forum of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Employers Organisations and Trade Associations of Sri Lanka appeal to all political parties contesting the forthcoming general election to call on their members and supporters to refrain from violence and maintain a peaceful environment, both during the pre-election campaign and afterwards. The private sector grouping reminded the political parties that Sri Lanka would be watched by the whole world during the next month to ascertain whether the political culture of the country is changing and whether there will be a forward march towards economic prosperity.
