Housing project for service personnel gets off ground
[06 September 2000]

Already 50 housing units have been constructed under the countrywide housing program for service personnel engaged in the North and east by the Rana Viru Seva Authority.

"Their homes are making rapid progress," said Armyne Wirasinha, Chairman of the Special Presidential Committee appointed by the president to mobilize resources and implement a fast track plan to provide housing and skills development for Rana Viru families in collaboration with the Rana Viru Seva Authority.

Construction of the 50 housing units in Anamaduwa and Nikaweratiya were commenced on 1st August and is due to complete by mid September.

Plans are under way to commence construction work in 8 other electorates in the North Central and Uva Provinces, where there are a large number of service personnel from those electorates serving in the North and East.

Mr. Wirasinha further said there has been a tremendous response from the private sector, both by way of cash contributions and support in many ways in the implementation of this program.  Already over Rs. 35 million has been contributed by private sector organizations and the Government has pledged a further Rs. 100 million from the President's Fund towards this endeavor. Action is being taken to speed up construction activities in as many electorates as possible islandwide simultaneously as funds, sufficient to construct nearly 1400 houses are now available to the RVSA.

The project has drawn all sections of society to rally round in the implementation of this project.

Mr. Wirasinha said that it was most encouraging to see that members of all political parties, Government Officials in the provinces, local authorities and wide spread community support has been received towards this effort.
