Protest against Maha Sangha as Election observers
[06 September 2000]

The Samastha Lanka Pevidi Organisation, an organisation of the Buddhist clergy, in a letter to the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake yesterday protested against the intervention of the Maha Sangha as election observers in the forthcoming General Elections.

Secretary of the Organization Vatinapaha Somananda Thera in his letter to the Elections Commissioner stated that the Buddhist monks who sought approval of the Commissioner to be election observers were acting against the People's Alliance.

Somananda Thera also questioned whether it would be a successful attempt to allow those Bhikkhus who represent Mavu Bima Surekeeme Sanvidanaya (Organisation for the Protection of the Motherland), to be election observers.

It is also unfair to allow the Maha Sangha to act as elections observers as it is inappropriate for their status as religious dignitaries, Somananda Thera added.

He also proposed to the Commissioner that it was appropriate to deploy foreign election observers other than deploying local observers, as they represent various political parties.
