LTTE rob Muslim fishermen and demand ransom for their boats
[07 September 2000]

A group of LTTE terrorists forcibly removed six fishing boats last week belonging to Muslim fishermen engaged in Valachchenai area, even after the fishermen pleaded for their hard earned, expensive boat out of which they live.

The terrorists had subsequently dumped these fishermen ashore and taken away their boats along with their other valuable possessions.

The value of the boats are estimated to be about Rs. 3,720,000.

The LTTE had then later informed the Valachchenai police that the fishermen would have to pay a ransom of one lakh to get the boats back.

The terrorists had indicated further, that they should come to Kadiraveli with the money.

Fishing is the main trade of the civilians living in this area where a majority of them are Muslims and Tamils. They live from what ever the money they make out of fishing. But now they have started complaining against LTTE thefts and harassment to the government, saying that they face a lot of difficulties both economically and security wise.

"The LTTE must put a stop to this stealing from civilians. They do not care about us but they go on propagating a false picture to the whole world," civilians complained to security authorities.
