Election heat in Jaffna
[07 September 2000]

Despite the escalating fighting between the Security Forces and the LTTE in certain parts of the Jaffna Peninsula, electioneering is hotting up between political parties contesting in the north the forthcoming parliamentary election, sources revealed.

EPRLF Secretary Suresh Premachandra who is leading an independent group said they would conduct small pocket meetings as well as big public rallies to reach the voters in the North.

A spokesman for the DPLF said they would first discuss with the Security Forces the arrangements to hold public meetings in Jaffna, Batticaloa and Wanni.

"Already, we are holding pocket meetings in these areas. Meetings are essential to enlighten the public on key issues and to preserve the spirit of democracy," he said.

TULF Secretary V. Anandasangari said their propaganda campaign is making headway despite provocative acts by rival political parties.

Former North East Chief Minister Vardharaja Perumal said his independent group is now holding closed door meetings due to the volatile situation in the area.

Sinhalaye Mahasammata Bhumiputra Party (SMBP) leader Harishchandra Wijetunga said his party will distribute leaflets in Jaffna as a prelude to their propaganda campaign. "We will also write to every voter in the peninsula individually," he said.

Other parties contesting in North are expected to commence their propaganda activities within the next few days.
