Sri Lanka and UK on Tuesday came to an agreement to designate carriers of both countries to operate 14 frequencies per week into Sri Lanka and UK respectively, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said yesterday. The following is the full text of the statement issued by the Foreign Ministry. Sri Lanka completed a successful round of negotiations on Air Services with the United Kingdom in Colombo. The Sri Lankan delegation was led by Mr. K. L. L. Wijeratne, additional secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation and the delegation of the United Kingdom was led by Ms. Sheelagh de C Evans, International Aviation Negotiations, Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. During these negotiations it was agreed between the two delegations that the designated carriers of both countries would be entitled to operate 14 frequencies per week into Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom respectively, over a period of time. At present SriLankan Airlines operates up to 9 frequencies per week to London. The agreed enhancement in the number of frequencies was in recognition of the fact that the total traffic between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom has recorded a significant growth between 1998 and 2000 and the United Kingdom is now the highest tourist generating market for Sri Lanka, replacing Germany which was for many years the foremost tourist generating country for Sri Lanka.
