Tough news control suspended

The government yesterday suspended tough emergency regulations imposed on total censorship of news.  Although tough news control is relaxed, Government stated that the censorship on military news would continue.

Publication of sensitive military news as mentioned in the emergency regulations imposed in 1998 will continue. The Director information, Ariya Rubasinghe, has been reappointed the competent authority and all matters relating to war effort have to be submitted to him.

Following that government has suspended the ban on processions and meeting with the view to the forth-coming general election on 10^th October 2000.
