Cheliyan Perinpanayagam, Former Mayor of Batticaloa and People’s Alliance (PA) candidate for the forthcoming general elections and S Manoharanpillai, PA organiser for Pandiruppu was shot dead by unidentified gunmen yesterday, morning. The incident took place at the residence of Manoharanpillai at Pandiruppu in the Ampara district, claimed to be a high security area. Perinpanayagam contested the Batticaloa local government election in 1994 under the TELO ticket and became the Mayor of Batticaloa. He continued in that office till 1999 until the dissolution of the Municipality. He later joined the PA to contest the parliamentary election.
