The Alliance for Democracy (AD) launches its first Swarna Bandana or Yellow Ribbon Campaign at the Elphinstone Theatre in Colombo, today. The ultimate objective of the campaign is to educate the people on the importance of having a free and fair election an Alliance spokesman said. Among the invitees were the Election Chief and 70 organizations and political parties. According to the spokesman, yellow was chosen because it is a colour used by pro-peace groups all over the world and is not a colour used by any local political party. Other organisations participating in the campaign would come from religious, medical and other professional groups, such as PAFFREL, CMEV,GMOA, Ceylon Bank Employees Union, Government Nurses’ Union, Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya, Free Media Movement and the Jathika Sangha Sabha. AD will hold campaigns at 500 places in Colombo including the Fort Railway station and the main bus stand on September 14. On September 19 an island wide campaign would be held, the spokesman said.
