Amid strong protests from Sri Lankans living in Canada, the Canada Post says it will not reprint the photo of Kumar Ponnambalam for their picture postage programme, sources revealed. Canada Post has also admitted that they received an order for the image of Velupillai Prabhakaran, the LTTE leader and the order was refused. The Corporation recently issued a vanity stamp depicting late Kumar Ponnambalam, a politician who openly supported the LTTE. This brought protests from Sri Lankans living in Canada. The Canadian Association for United Sri Lanka, an organisation of many distinguished Sri Lankans living in Canada wrote to the Canada post Corporation expressing their concern over the fact that Ponnambalam was a LTTE supporter and is being featured in one of their stamps. “ We’re trying to get a hold of the person who ordered these stamps and find out what’s going on,” Tim McGurrin spokesman for Canada Post said. “ We want to speak to this person and find out whether he is misleading us, but so far we’ve only reached his answering machine,” he said. The order which is described as a large one was placed shortly after the postal service announced on April 30 a new programme called Picture Postage, in which Canadians can order stamps showing pictures of themselves, their loved ones or even their pets.
