Complaint lodged against Elections Commissioner with SLHRC
[12 September 2000]

A complaint against the Election Commissioner, Dayananda Dissanayake has been lodged with the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission by Attorney-at-law, Ananda Goonetilake on the grounds that Dissanayake had given orders to print stickers relating to the forthcoming elections at a private press.

Goonetilake filed the complaint through a petition citing violation of human rights of the voters. He questioned why the stickers were not printed at the Government Press.

Special attention should be paid to find out whether the Election Commissioner has violated the transparent nature of his ‘supreme duty’ through this act.

“ He said the Government Press has completed all election orders successfully and without any suspicion up to now. He has queried as to why such a major project was entrusted to a private press. He also asks whether technological capacity and security printing capabilities of the said press has been evaluated before awarding the contract,” local newspapers reported.
