CID quiz four on secret stickers
[14 September 2000]

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has questioned four persons who allegedly had the secret poll card stickers in their possession at a print shop, sources reveal.

The investigators who had a lengthy discussion with the Elections Commissioner regarding the printing of poll card stickers at a public press last week, said they had to question several more persons who have allegedly been involved in the matter.

The CID raided a press in Colombo and detected secret stickers printed for the General Election on an order placed by the Election Department.

Meanwhile, the Elections Commissioner, Dayananda Dissanayake said that he was “ personally satisfied” with the honesty and integrity of the person who undertook the printing of the poll card stickers.

He also said that it is the Commissioner’s responsibility “ to adopt whatever legal methods he thinks fit” to conduct elections in a free and fair manner. He was to disclose this measure to contesting political parties, independent groups and to the media at the “appropriate time.”
